Le Protecteur
Man of war (1760-1787)
This model, the name of which is debated, represents an ornate 64 gun twin deck warship. She is built in pure Louis the fifteenth style and comes from the royal collections.
The mizzen mast still carries a lateen sail below topsails. But the sail does not extend in front of the mizzen mast and this detail allows the dating of this warship between 1760 and 1770.
The building of this model, albeit somewhat difficult, is possible for a skilful model builder who will be rewarded by a nearly perfect example of the French Navy wooden ships.
