La Loire - four mast bark (1897 - 1924)

The Loire, belonging to the AD Bordes and sons company was built in Nantes at the Loire shipyards and was one of the finest Cape Horners of the time.

As for other units of the Bordes fleet, the Loire transported nitrate from Chili to French ports. A speedy vessel, she linked Portland to Iquique in 66 days and Iquique to Dunkirk in 79 days. In October 1913, under Captain Jaffré, she rescued under dramatic conditions the 26 survivors of the crew of the English three-masted Dalgonar who had capsized off the Chilian coast.

During her life, La Loire was able to avoid collisions, stranding and German submarines: she was really a “lucky ship”.

Decommissionned in 1924, the Loire was sold to shipbreakers.
