The galley is the ultimate development of oar driven warships down from Greek or Roman constructions.

XVII century galleys belonged to one of three classifications, senzilles (ordinary), patronnes, and réales. The réales traditionally used by the general of the galley fleet, had 32 rows of oarsmen and carried ornate decoration. Their low military value led to their gradual decline at the beginning of the 18th century.

The Museum model is a superb example of these very elegant crafts, her sculptures are reputed to Puget and some of the original sculptures are exhibited in the Museum. The building of this model requires a lot of skill and patience and the wood carving should be made by expert craftsmen for a perfect rendition of its beauty.
