L'Astrolabe - Corvette (1811 - 1851)
Launched in 1811 under the name La Coquille, she carried out a number of
hydrographic missions off the coasts of the Levant and in the Black
Sea.
From August 1822 to March 1825, captained by Duperrey she sailed around the world on a scientific expedition. Renamed Astrolabe and captained by Dumont d’Urville, she left Toulon in April 1826 for a second around the world voyage in order to try and find the remnants of the Lapérouse expedition and was able to locate Vanikoro. She returned to Marseilles in March 1829. From June 1837 to September 1840 she undertook a third scientific mission in the Antarctic during which Dumont d’Urville discovered, named and planted the French flag on the Terre Adélie.
