LE CHARLEMAGNE - first class battleship (1894-1920)

From 1731 to 1894, a number of warships were named Charlemagne:
a privateer from Nantes in 1731, an 86 gun man of war launched in
Antwerp in 1807, disarmed and destroyed in 1814 in Brest, another
privateer captured in 1814 by the British and a second line warship
with her construction starting in 1833 in Toulon who was to be named
Hector refitted while still at the yard with an engine, and launched
under the name of Charlemagne in 1850, and decommissioned in 1882.
This first class battleship was built in 1894 and launched the 17th of October 1895: she was the first to have her big guns in two double barrelled turrets placed in the axis of the ship.
Once launched she is part of the Mediterranean fleet, which had two divisions of powerful battleships, and is part of all the naval exercises of the fleet, is part of the Dardanelles expedition, and carries the flag of Admiral Guépratte from the 25th of March 1915 to the 1stApril 1915; she was finally decommissioned in Toulon in 1920.
This battleship had “high offensive capacity with its big guns, its middle range artillery was too weak, she had excellent nautical qualities and good stability”.
