Tartan rigged for war - (1810)
The tartan is a type of vessel with many different variations in shape or rigging. It may have one to
three masts, the jib is tacked on a head or a bowsprit. The main lateen sail may be replaced, under
trying weather conditions by a square sail called “fortune sail”, there may also be a topsail with
the stormsail replaced by a jigger.
Mainly used for fishing and trading, one may however find tartans on the rolls of the Navy, serving as dispatch vessels, or patrol boats, and even as privateers, particularly during the Revolution and under Napoleon.
