Le La Fayette
Frigate (1995)

The frigate Lafayette is the prototype for a series of six similar vessels designed to replace the aging escort destroyers. Their missions have been defined following the geostrategic conclusions drawn from the Eastern block demise. The purpose of these vessels is the control of the seas in sensitive regions, and to participate in crisis arising outside Europe. They are very advanced technically.

All the “vertical” sides of the ship have a 10° angle so as to deflect into the sea or the sky the remaining radar echo not absorbed by their special coating.

This vessel has also the latest developments in infrared, acoustical, electromagnetic and nuclear warfare environment technologies.

The modular construction allows for an easy conversion to antisubmarine warfare.
The other four frigates of the series are: Surcouf, Courbet, Guépratte and Aconit.
