• Le Bois-Rosé - Herring fishing lugger

Bois-Rosé (end of 19th century)
Herring fishing lugger from Fécamp harbor

This 3 masted lugger was designed at the end of the 18th century for the French Navy, (cfer the booklet of the AAMM concerning the lugger “Le Coureur”), and possibly even earlier as one can see from the drawings of Gueroult du Pas in 1710, where the square sails are replaced by fore and aft sails as for example the Dieppe “gondolas”.

During the Napoleonic wars, all sides had luggers manned by privateers, such as the “Adolphe” at the Dieppe Museum and searched for ever finer lines to enhance speed. At that time the rigging of luggers is also adopted coasting luggers, coastal tramps and fishing smacks such as bisquines or herring fishing boats

Fishing with drifting nets leads to hulls with a “cod head, mackerel tail”shape, wide at the front end and following the wave aft, with the main beam situated 2/5th from the bow.

The hull of the Paris Museum model described in this booklet is carved out of a single block of wood, just like those in the Fécamp and Dieppe museums. There are therefore no inside details nor timbers. However all the hatches, companionways are movable which allows to guess at the inside organization of the hull.

Model building : Simple

Scale of drawing : 1/50th,
two plans, thirty colour photographs, one notice (french).
