La Gloire - Armored frigate (1858)

The name Gloire was first used for a galley launched in 1691 then by seven frigates built between 1707 and 1838.
This armoured frigate was designed by the famous naval engineer Dupuy de Lôme, was started in 1858 and launched in 1859. This vessel is the end result of a long series of studies and trials with propellers which had already led to the construction of the remarkable Napoleon and the armouring of ships which the progress of artillery had made mandatory.
To reduce the weight of the vessel to compensate the 800 tons of armor, Dupuy de Lôme, starting from the design of the Napoleon, reduced the sails by a third, and the number of guns. As the resulting vessel had only one battery deck, as the former sail driven frigates, it was decided to classify her as a frigate.
This vessel is the first armoured ship in the world, and is today of historic importance, since all the modern warships derive directly from its concepts.
