LE RICHELIEU - Battleship (1946)

Built in the yard of the Brest arsenal, the Richelieu was launched January 17 1939. Her trials took place in spring 1940 and she sailed immediately for Dakar. Two years after the armistice, she sailed to New York to be fitted with state of the art AA artillery and detection systems.
In August 1943 she leaves the Brooklyn yard for North Africa and is then incorporated in the Home Fleet, based in Scapa Flow from where she sails for raids off the Norwegian coast. In March she is sent to reinforce the Eastern Fleet, based in Ceylan. She is involved in many actions in the waters off Malaysia and particularly in the shelling of Sabang (Sumatra). In October, she returns to Toulon, is modernised in Casablanca and careened in Gibraltar before returning to Ceylan. After a stay in Indochina she heads back and arrives in France February 11 1946, is involved in various exercises and carries the President of the Republic to Dakar in April 1947.
