Le Jean Bart
Battleship (1955)
Construction started December 12, 1936 in the Caquot big form of the Loire yards in St.Nazaire, but the Jean Bart is not finished in spring 1940 as the German army invades France. Thanks to the indomitable spirit of Captain Ronarc’h, the extraordinary work of the yard workers, the assistance of the Road and Bridges administration and the crew, she is able to leave her berth in the night of June 18, 1940 as yet unfinished. She is however able to reach Casablanca under her own steam after an air attack off St.Nazaire, fortunately without damage, but she is damaged during the fighting in November 1942.
Repaired and back in Brest in 1945, she receives the complement to her armament with state of the art antiaircraft artillery. After excellent trials, she is assigned to the Mediterranean fleet, and sails to Toulon where she replaces the Richelieu assigned to Brest.
