Le Hoche
Battleship (1886 -1913)
From 1797 onwards a number of warships bore the name of Lazare Hoche: a privateer lugger in 1797, a 74
un warship, formerly the Barra, then the Pegasus (who became the Donegal after capture by the English
in 1798), a combination sail and propeller 90 gun warship (formerly the Annibal who participated in the Crimean war was converted into a convict ship under the name Loire and ended as a pontoon in Saïgon in 1896), this battleship launched in 1886, and afterwards a Rhine steamer commandeered by the Navy from 1920 to 1930, a destroyer of the Mogador type planned in 1939, and finally a German destroyer transferred to France after the 1945 Armistice and decommissioned in 1956.
The battleship launched in 1886 was decommissioned in 1913, and finished as a floating target which was sunk during naval exercises off the Hyères islands.
During her entire life, she was extensively refurbished and modifications were brought to its armament, armour, machines and bridge.
She had an extremely active life in the Mediterranean and the Atlantic, was part of numerous official ceremonies, and the victim of accidents: in 1892, off Marseilles a liner tore itself open on her ram, in 1898 she touched a rock off La Teignouse in Quiberon bay, and during exercises off Porquerolles she hit shallows, but all of these incidents were of little consequence for the ship because of the sturdiness of her construction.
This battleship was decommissioned in May 1911.
The plan represents the Hoche as she was in 1891.
