La Couronne - Man o’war (1629-1640)

Isaac de Launay Razilly presented a study on the Navy to Richelieu in 1626 in which he objected to “ships too heavy to take correctly their tacks…” and vaunted the construction of light and swift crafts. The siege of La Rochelle soon contradicted this judgment and when the construction of La Couronne was decided in 1629, the same Razilly was put in charge and then took command of the vessel.

This ship was built at la Roche-Bernard, near the mouth of La Vilaine and was probably finished in the river Seudre in 1635 after launching. After receiving its armament in 1638 she joined the de Sourdis fleet before Fontarabie. The following year a new campaign took her on the Cantabric coast, she was then decommissioned in Brest and no further records exist.

It seems that a large part of this model’s reputation comes from the model built in 1867 under Admiral Pâris, based on data provided by “Hydrographie” of father Fournier, model which disappeared during the second world war. This presentation, made by reinterpreting more scientifically XVII century documentation allowed the drawing of a model with improved seaworthiness.
