L'Arromanches - Aircraft carrier (1954)
Formerly the Royal Navy Colossus, the Arromanches aircraft carrier
was built in 1944 at the Vickers Armstrong yard and sold to France
in 1946. After exercises in the North Atlantic to train the new French
crew, she sails from Toulon in 1948 for Indochina. Until 1953 she will
be there four times and will give strong and efficient support to the
French expeditionary force in Indochina. She participated in action
during the Rivière Noire and Dien Bien Phu battles. Between each campaign
she would return to France for careening and renewal of her planes.
In 1955, she was involved in allied exercises in the Mediterranean and in the Atlantic and was an active participant in the definition of new hunter/killer attack procedures, anti submarine warfare and convoy air defence. She was awarded the War Cross with palm for service abroad while in Indochina.
