The Surcouf was a remarkable ship and drew the attention of all naval observers. At the time of her commissioning in 1932 in the Cherbourg arsenal she was the largest submarine in the world, a true underwater cruiser.
After cruises bringing her to Casablanca, Conakry or the French Antilles, she is on her way towards Fort de France when war breaks out. She joins Atlantic convoy escorts and is in Plymouth when the armistice is signed. Recommissionned in October 1941, she sails to the USA for careening then sails to St.Pierre et Miquelon and the Bermudas. Ordered to join the fight in the Pacific, she sets sail February 12 1942 from the Bermudas for Tahiti through the Panama canal. In the night of the 18th of February she is rammed by an American cargo and sinks with a total loss of life. She was cited on the army roll.
