Le Dunkerque
Battleship (1935-1942)

The Dunkerque was the first battleship that France began building after World War I as an answer to Germany’s launching of their famous pocket battleship “Deutschland” series. The keel was laid December 24,1932, in Brest and the hull was launched on October 2, 1935. She was commissioned two years later and represented France at the Naval parade held for George the Sixth’s coronation. As war started, she is in Brest and with the Strasbourg and some cruisers she constitutes a division charged with the protection of transports between Morocco and the bay of Biscaye. In November-December 1939 she is part of a joint force with the English assigned to intercept the Deutschland; but the Deutschland escapes, thanks to an awful weather. On Armistice day the Dunkerque is in Mers el Kebir where she is severely damaged by the British attack of July 1940. Back in Toulon for repairs, she is scuttled in the big Vauban form on November 1942.
